SHAREHOLDERS OF ORBIT CAPITAL INVESTMENTS LTD

Orbit Capital Investments Ltd has a broad shareholder base which includes, UniPalm Investment Holdings, Workers Investment Corporation, Union Alliance Holdings etc.

The majority shareholder of Orbit Capital Investments Ltd, is UniPalm Investment Holdings Limited.

UniPalm believes that sustainable empowerment can only be achieved when historically disadvantaged groups overcome the “victim” syndrome and actively embrace opportunities for change and growth. This understanding formed the initial foundation upon which broad-based empowerment company was established.

After starting out as a politically driven initiative, empowerment in South Africa progressed to an institutional phase - where transformation and change which was driven primarily by large organisations and corporations. The country now finds itself in the third and arguably most important phase of transformation, where empowerment is broad based and every individual, group or community is ultimately responsible for making the most of the opportunities with which they are presented for growth, development and empowerment.

UniPalm was established in 2001 to facilitate and drive such third generation empowerment by making opportunities accessible to the masses and facilitating the empowerment of historically disenfranchised individuals and communities through innovative value investments.

A primary objective of the company is to ensure that all South Africans enjoy the opportunity to benefit from the wealth that will be unlocked through the increasing privatisation focus in the country. However, the UniPalm approach does not involve handouts. The company has a uniquely individual approach to empowerment that is based on the personal investment of time, effort and money in order to grow economic value.

The principles of empowerment that underpin the activities of UniPalm are clearly evidenced by the company’s mission statement:

UniPalm is a broad-based national empowerment investment vehicle that empowers people through value creation for its shareholders via a prudent investment approach that is based on equity and effort contribution

A brief history of UniPalm

UniPalm was established in February 2001 with the authorisation of 500 000 000 shares at 50 cents per share. In order to promote an understanding of the underlying principles of the UniPalm investment approach, a minimum purchase of 4 800 (2 400) shares was allowed, with individuals being encouraged to pool their finances with community or family members if they did not have the required amount for the minimum share purchase.

After its establishment, the directors of UniPalm undertook an extensive awareness campaign that included radio promotions and a national road show that took the unique UniPalm approach to empowerment right into the heart to previously disenfranchised communities.

The results of this awareness campaign, which reached more than 100 000 historically disenfranchised people, were very positive and UniPalm not only saw an influx of shareholders, but also succeeded in gathering a database of 50 000 black individuals who showed a passion for empowerment and transformation and a willingness to invest in opportunities that promoted these ends.

Two years on, UniPalm has gone from strength to strength, with a number of very successful commercial ventures that have seen a steady rise in shareholder numbers and ongoing growth in the confidence displayed in the company and its directors.

The UniPalm shareholder base now stands at more than one thousand, comprising direct and indirect shareholders. The vision of the directors is to expand this number to at least fifty thousand in the long-term, thereby achieving the company’s goal of bringing empowerment opportunities to the masses.

UniPalm’s unique strengths

The success of UniPalm over the past two years can be attributed to a number of key attributes and strengths of the company. These include:

  • Broad representation at both a geographic and demographic level;
  • Non-political and non-personality based approach;
  • The investment by executives and shareholders of their own money demonstrates the belief that true empowerment involves personal investment;
  • Influential and respected board members who are well-connected within the South African business world;
  • Focus on opportunities that traditionally have a high barrier to entry;
  • A highly proactive approach to taking advantage of opportunities;
